Mr Mick on SALife TV - Watch Full Video here

"Another classic that’s been reborn is Clare’s Leasingham Winery… it was once the biggest and one of the oldest wineries in the region but sadly it closed back in 2009. Recently though, renowned local winemaker Tim Adams and wife Pam Goldsack purchased the site (complete with original 6 metre high copper still) and gave it a brand new name."

Mr Mick Rosé 2012

Most people associate rosé with the warmer months, so here is a one for the road. It's made by one of the Clare Valley's finest winemakers, Tim Adams. This isn't your bone-dry, wine aficionado-type of rosé, but it is on the full flavoured side. It's a blend of tempranillo and pinot gris and is perfumed, fruity and easy drinking - at a knock-down price.

2012 Mr. Mick Rosé, Clare Valley

Since taking over the famous Leasingham winery in South Australia's Clare Valley a couple of years ago, Tim Adams has launched a new label called Mr.Mick, dedicated to Mick Knappstein, legendary winemaker from Leasingham's heyday back in the 1960s and 70s. This is my pick of the wines I have tried in the well-priced Mr.Mick range which also includes a good, juicy riesling. A blend of tempranillo and pinot gris, it's a fuller-bodied, off-dry style rosé, designed for occasions when you prefer your pink wine on the bold and fruity side.

Bargain of the week
Mr Mick Shiraz, Clare Valley 2010

This is in Tim Adams' budget label, named in honour of his mentor, Mick Knappstein. It has good depth of colour, simple red-frui and herbal aromas and is clean and well made. It is lighter weighted within the shiraz context; smooth and easygoing with moderate tannins. Now to four years. 14 per cent alcohol. 87/100

Mr Mick Shiraz

"An honest Clare Valley shiraz at a good price. Smells of berries and plums, with a minty touch and a seasoning of oak. Medium bodied, with earthy flavours, good intensity and a dry finish.
Ageing? Drink over three years
Food ideas: Barbecued spare ribs; stir-fried beef."

Passion for Fruit

"Finally the most interesting barbeque red I came across over the holiday period and certainly outstanding value was the MrMick Tempranillo 2009. This is the Tim Adams 'value' label and I think this variety is the next big thing in Australia. A light claret colour this is herb scented and juicy with strawberry flavours and a hint of spice soft tannins linger at the finish in a full-bodied yet easy drinking red. I think it needs a char-grilled food but maybe that's just me. Good Drinking."

2012 Mr Mick Rosé, Clare Valley, SA

"The attractively priced Mr Mick label is Tim Adams's tribute to Mick Knappstein, legendary winemaker at the Leasingham winery, now owned by Adams. An unusual blend of tempranillo and pinot gris, this is a fuller-bodied, off-dry style of rosé, perfect for people who like pink wine on the round-'n'-fruity side."

Mr.Mick Clare Valley Rosé

"The Mr Mick range is made by Tim Adams in the Clare Valley in honour of Tim's early teacher in the wine industry, Mick Knappstein.
It's beautifully fruity with a hint of fruity sweetness, with loads of raspberry aromas and flavours, crisp balanced acidity and excellent balance.
Great on its own as an aperitif or with salads and Asian cuisine."

Mr.Mick Tribute to Clare Maker

"Tim Adams has released three wines under the Mr.Mick label.
It is not a gimmick (pardon the pun) but a serious tribute to Mick Knappstein who made some great wines in the Clare Valley at Leasingham for some 50 years and introduced Tim Adams to the art of winemaking. All are bargain priced at $15 a bottle and the trio comprises a tempranillo, a shiraz and a rosé.
Tempranillo was not a varietal in the Clare in Mick Knappstein's day but is the sort of thing that Tim Adams reckons Mr.Mick would have loved working with, firstly because it is so suited to the area and secondly, because it produces a full bodied easy drinking red wine.
It is crafted in the Mick Knappstein style with subtle oak, and hints of strawberries, spiced and a long lingering dry finish. The wine was fermented in French oak for two years before bottling this year. It is a blend of tempranillo and pinot gris.

The shiraz on the other hand was a grape with which Knappstein had a great deal of experience and in his day he made some of Australia's finest in the opulent style of the Mr Mick 2010 Shiraz. This wine has lifted violet and blueberry fruit with hints of oak from 18 months in barrels and it is a blend from three vineyards in the Clare. Both shiraz and the tempranillo are given ten years drinking life by their maker.

The rosé on the other hand is not given a long life and is probably at its best now. Lots of raspberry and strawberry with hints of lychees and white peach and best of all it has a lingering dry finish and is a great wine on its own or with food ( Asian ). It is a young wine and frankly one of the best rosés we have seen this year."

Barbecue
Mr Mick 2010 Shiraz

"The late Mick Knappstein, after whom this wine is named, loved Clare Valley shiraz and providing decent wine at reasonable prices. This fulfils his wish, with its dark and red berry fruit, a lick of oak and fine tannins. Enjoy over the next five ears with beef kebabs, a steak or gourmet beef sausages. <...> Try Chalk & Cheese or the wine outlets or ask at other wine retailers."

Mr Mick 2010 Shiraz

"When Tim Adams made this wine in 2010 he would never have imagined a year down the track owning the historic Leasingham Winery. He sourced shiraz from the Rogers, Sheoak and Vine vineyards, made the wine and moved it to oak barrels for maturation. The wine emerged from barrels 18 months later and Adams allocated it to the brand new Mr Mick label - a budget brand created for the old Leashingham operation. It's a lovely wine at this price, showing attractive cherry-like and spicy shiraz varietal aroma and flavours. The palate is rich but not heavy, and the tannins soft and easy. "

Mr Mick 2009 Tempranillo

"Clare Valley winemaker Tim Adams served his winemaking apprenticeship, from 1975, under Mick Knappstein in Clare's landmark Leasingham Winery. Adams later established his own brand. Then in 2011 as Constellation Wines Australia imploded, Adams, with partner Pam Goldsack, purchased the Leasingham winery, but not the brand. The inexpensive Mr Mick range, dedicated to his old master, are the first wines released from the new venture. It's a satisfying, medium-bodied, savoury style, sourced from Adams' and Goldsack's Ladera Vineyards in the Clare Valley, and made a couple years before the Leasingham acquisition (presumably for the Tim Adams label)."

Mr Mick Clare Valley Shiraz 2010

"This range is made by Tim Adams, one of the Clare Valley's leading winemakers, with the aim of being affordable, tasty and ready for immediate drinking. You'll get no argument here - and at $15 it's a bargain. This isn't a flashy wine, rather a gentle, easy-drinking drop with a decent length and balance. It's one to remember for those times you want an easy drinking wine that won't break the bank."

One For Lunch
Mr Mick 2009 Tempranillo

"The Clare Valley's Tim Adams and wife Pam have released a 2009 tempranillo under their Mr Mick label that honours the late Mick Knappstein, who for over 50 years made wines at Leasingham Winery that Tim and Pam bought in 2011.
Tempranillo was virtually unknown in Mick's day, but Tim and Pam have discovered how well suited it is to the district, producing a full-bodied yet easy drinking red with a smooth tannins, strawberry flavours ad a beaut hint of spice.
At only $15, far less than other local tempranillos, it's a wine that will go down well at the table with a wide diversity of cuisines - and certainy with the roast turkey if you're starting to think already about what to put on the table for Christmas day."

Mr Mick Clare Valley Riesling 2011

"Mr Mick is Tim Adams’ recreation of the old Leasingham Bin 5 Riesling, created by his mentor Mick Knappstein back in the 1970s. Adams led a buyback of the historic Clare winery earlier this year but as the purchase didn’t include the Leasingham name, named the wines after his late boss. This is a fresh, light, lemony Riesling with a soft mid-palate and fresh, almost dry finish. It’s made for early drinking. Adams sourced the fruit from the Rogers vineyard (once part of Leasingham) that he now owns jointly with his wife, Pam Goldsack."

Mr Mick Shiraz 2009 Sheoaks and St Clare Vineyards, Clare Valley, SA

"One Friday last January winemaker Tim Adams and his wife Pam Goldsack became the first private owners of Clare Valley’s Leasingham Winery since H.J.Heinz acquired it from the Knappstein family in 1971. Though this year’s American seller, Constellation Wines, retained the Leasingham name, Adams and Goldsack’s first wines retain a historic connection – saluting Mick Knappstein, legendary Leasingham winemaker ( and a young Tim’s boss and mentor 36 years ago). The wine captures the essence of Clare Shiraz in the 2009 vintage – fragrant, full, juicy and rich with just the right amount of spicy, soft tannins."

New Look for Leasingham Site

"Veteran Clare Valley winemaker Tim Adams took on the old Leasingham site on the edge of Clare Township, renamed it Mr Mick in honour of his mentor Mick Knappstein, and now operates the stylish Mr Mick cellar door and restaurant on the site.  <…> Mr Mick menu features a wide range of tapas-style dishes that may range from pan-fried haloumi to prawns with harissa sauce to crisp soft shell baby mudcrab served with a star anise and orange glaze. A favourite with locals is the slow-roasted pork belly on crushed new potato with candied shiraz – but most visitors opt to share a selection of dishes. Adams says the menu has an emphasis on fresh seasonal produce and visitors are invited to enjoy wines by the glass. “The business has taken off like the proverbial rocket,” Adams says. “The wines are selling really well and the restaurant is booked out most days. 2011 Mr Mick Riesling - Clare Valley ($14)

"Tim Adams has paid homage to his mentor Mick Knappstein with his new label, Mr Mick, and has produced an attractive, soft Riesling perfect for warm Adelaide nights. Loaded with your usual suspects of lemon and lime with a touch of sweetness but still delivered with a fresh approach... lots of value here"

Adelaide Matters, April 2012

The Saturday Age, April 2012

"...beside the trail head, is another of the valley's newest cellar doors. Mr Mick opened in June, taking over the old Leasingham winery. The cellar door is inside an old bluestone still house, where pipes run a maze across the walls above a copper still. Mr Mick is the creation of winemaker Tim Adams, who grew up in Clare and completed his apprenticeship in the 1970s at Leasingham. The chief winemaker at the time was Mick Knappstein; Mr Mick is named in his honour. Wines remain consistent to Clare's reputation, ranging from a bubbly Blanc de Blanc to a Late Harvest Riesling."

2011 Mr Mick Riesling, Clare Valley ($15)

"Mick Knappstein was the Clare Valley's shining light - steering his family company, Leasingham and the region into the modern (table wine) age. One of Mr Mick's (as he was known) last apprentices was Tim Adams - who first worked at Leasingham in 1975. The Adams family have now "bought back the farm". The 2011 Mr Mick Riesling echoes the style of the original Leasingham Bin 5 Riesling. It is a streamlined wine, boasting lots of lemon, lime and exotic spice flavours with a lively acidity to carry the finish."
